Lilac looked a little less upset when we got to the compound. I found Nic as soon as we arrived and cornered him in his office, alone. “Why didn’t you tell me you put wards on the shop?”

He closed out the computer file he’d been working on before we arrived and then stood, coming around his desk to give me a hug. “Nice to see you too, sis. Sorry, I don’t know about any wards on your shop. You told me you didn’t want that level of protection because it might affect Harry’s ability to wander or cross over.”

“I know I said that, so why did you put wards up?”

“You’re not listening.” He nodded to a leather wing back chair by the fireplace in his office. My brother was all about appearances. Even at home. “Sit down. I have a feeling this is going to be a long conversation.”

He sat in a matching chair and waited for me to sit as well. I took off my jacket since he’d had a fire lit in the fireplace and the room was toasty. “Okay, now why do you think you have wards on the shop? And why do you think it was me?”

“Tessa told me that she can’t come into the shop because of the wards. Or exactly, she said she’d see me tomorrow if my wards on the shop were down. I don’t have wards on the shop.” I carefully folded my jacket across my lap. “And I can’t have wards because there was a spirit besides Harry there talking to Lilac yesterday. She thought it was Skye but according to Tessa, Skye crossed over. She said the Knights told her.”

“Okay, I can’t verify the Skye thing, but the Knights are real. Tessa said she talked to them? That’s strange. I’ve never heard a firsthand account of the Knights talking to a soul. However, most of the souls they approach take their advice and move on.” Nic rubbed a spot on his armrest. “Why is Tessa staying? Are we sure it’s Tessa? You said the other ghost wasn’t Skye.”

“I don’t know that answer, but from my interaction with her just now, I believe it’s really her. She’s just so Tessa.” I grinned at the memory of her teasing me about Bubba.

“I’ll stop by tomorrow and see if I can feel out the wards. If they’re from our corporation, they’ll have a signature. They could be by the Charming Homes Corporation.” He leaned forward. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Your neighbor and his assertion that he’s a monster hunter.”

“I really have to learn to build a better wall to keep you out of my thoughts.” I leaned forward, watching the fire and matching Nic’s stance. “Anyway, what do you know?”

“Mom told me stories about a group who fought monsters. I figured it was a fairy tale. You got the princesses locked up in towers that saved themselves and I got stories about knights and monster hunters that saved the world.
